thinking about our garden

I think this is going to be the year that our garden finally thrives instead of dying from total lack of attention. The kids and I are all excited. We’ve been working the soil. Planting seeds. Planning meals from our garden. Veggies are sprouting. Bean are always my favorite to watch grow. We grow them inside all the time just because the kids like to watch the process. There is just something so incredible about the way the bean seeds pop out of the ground and the new life springs out. If I were a poet I think I might want to write a poem about beans. But, I’m not a poet. You are lucky.

It is easy for me to plan and dream about what I want our garden to be like, actually taking care of that garden is a little harder! Just for fun I looked around Etsy at garden related items. Pretend shopping if you will. Here’s my favorite finds. Maybe one day they will find a home around here one day.

  • Necole @seriouslysassymama - I have always wanted that print Lettuce Turnip the Beet. It makes me laugh every time.

  • Crystal Prychidko - We tried a garden last year too..It went okay, but I didn’t get the results like I wanted! So, once again I’m gonna try 🙂 I’m just getting my seedlings going, since here in the cold land of OH we keep getting drops in temps, so I have a rule of thumb to never plant anything until after mothers day!!

Good luck on your garden! I love reading about your adventures in it and the coop looks great!!

  • cassi - We’ve done the mushrooms before they are great fun to grow

  • mandi@herbanhomestead - You found some great things! Love that Charming Gardener print! And those mushrooms!

ps- I think a poem about beans has already been written. It’s a classic entitled “The Magical Fruit”. ; )

  • Tracy - I love the idea of the pyramid planter…I could totally use that for herbs and lettuces. I actually bought two of those items for people as gifts…the birdhouse for my grandparents. I was thinking about getting one for my kids next year for Christmas. And I almost bought the mushroom growing kit for a friend and instead bought this

It is a mushroom log and it will grow mushrooms continuously for years…much better for the price!

  • Debbie C - I really like that rectangular concrete planter. My brother-in-law bought a book on how to make things out of concrete, and he went to town making all kinds of small planters and candle holders for his patio. You could totally DIY it!

  • Carol - An old poem comes to mind that starts “Beans, beans, good for the heart……

  • Leah - I just purchased “Lettuce Turnip the Beet” for my kitchen! It’s even better in person. 🙂

  • Amanda Torres - Good luck, can’t wait to see it grow.

Unrelated – when reading blogs (not only yours) through Bloglovin, it doesn’t show all the pictures so I have to click on every blog and actually read it from the site, which is seriously pointless to have the reader in the first place, anyway not your problem.
Just wondering if you could make your website mobile friendly?
    I miss Google Reader 🙁

  • Jenny B. - I admire you for planting a garden with your kids. I am good at killing houseplants. No garden here. 😉

I have a kinda random question… How do you decide which images to watermark on your blog? I’m trying to decide if I should start watermarking mine, but I don’t know if it’s necessary, and I don’t want it to be obtrusive. Plus, it takes a lot of time. Anyway… just curious. 🙂

  • Julien - Based on the beauty and quality of your photographs, I think that if you developed a passion for poetry, the world would be a lot richer because of it.

FYI, There’s no Etsy link for me!

  • carolina - Ha, ha. Do you know Pablo Neruda? Was a Chilean poet who won a Nobel. And he made a poem for almost everything even fish soup!!! Maybe he wrote one for beans.

  • Kate @ Songs Kate Sang - I would like to share with you the only poem I know about beans…

    Beee—an Dip. Bean Dip.
    Beee—an Dip. Bean Dip.

You got your bean dip in the mornin’
You got your bean dip in the evenin’
You gotta have your bean dip every darn day
Cause I’m a bean dip man. Hey!
