  • Carol Paxman - Wow, she looks amazing, as always. Isn’t it funny that even though her lip has changed when I look at her I see her first smile, the one we all fell in love with. I’ve been trying to explain to my daughter that no matter how grown up she becomes when I look at her I see that little girl with the big grin and the messy hair. Guess it’s the same with little one, that first look, the one that made all of our hearts melt,is still there, under the new look, and probably always will be. Hope you and the rest of your family are doing well, surgery is stressful for everyone. Prayers will continue to flow.

  • Jess - aww! Love the hair and the lip πŸ˜€ Thank you for sharing your journey with us!

  • Meg - It is amazing how fast little ones recover from surgery. My daughter had cranio facial reconstruction at 7 months old and there is nothing worse than handing over your baby over to the surgery team and then waiting, waiting and waiting. Good luck and speedy recovery.
I know what it is like to need to hold your baby close post op but don’t forget to take care of yourself too. Blessings to you and yours..

  • April - I’ve been checking your blog off and on all day for updates. And OMG, Little One’s story has touched my heart, and she sure looks like she’s coming through it all like a Super Woman after all. I can’t wait to see that scrunched up little nose in a big ol’ smile soon! Praying for a speedy recovery & everything that comes with it. Lots of love and prayers for you ALL!

  • Sandy - WOW!! That’s amazing!!

  • Sherry Eckblad - That is totally amazing! I guess I didn’t realize they could change it so drastically in one operation. So happy for you all.

  • Megan - I’m so happy that you posted and that it went well and that she is alert and snuggled in her mommy’s arms. Can’t wait to hear more about how you are feeling as well and how she’s dealing. I think you have said she needs multiple surgeries?? I’m not positive about that but hopefully you have the biggest one over with first. Praying for you all — I’m a newer reader and just love your blog.

  • Amber D - What is amazing to me about this photo is the lack of visible signs of the surgery. I mean, yes, her gorgeous little lips are changed, but I don’t see stiches, blood, etc. I’m sure there are more signs to those who are there, holding her close, but I’m kind of in awe and wonderment about the process. I pray that it’s a bit of a symbol of the rest of her life – that the pieces of her past that could leave so much trauma and rawness would be so shrouded in God’s grace, that only the beauty comes shinning through.

  • Lyn - So I have posted everywhere you have posted this beautiful pic. Glad she is in your arms.

  • Sara - Oh these pictures are bringing such tears to my eyes. After reading your post yesterday I decided it was time to watch “Smile Pinki” with my kids (ages 6,4,1). We’ve had it for a while and was waiting for the right moment. They LOVED it, then we had a time of prayer for Little One’s surgery. They’ve been seeing pictures of Little One since you brought her home from China and we’ve been talking about cleft lips. My daughter has always exclaimed how beautiful she is, but just now when I showed her this picture she squealed with delight to see her “new lips”. My four year old son even said “mom, she’s still so cute!” Thank you for sharing this journey with us! We will continue to pray for her recovery and all the changes she has ahead of her, and for you too. Blessed be!

  • Cara Yeh - Wow, that is amazing — I thought it would be all stitches or something! Many continued blessings to you and your family!

amazing what modern medical technology can achieve, isn’t it?

was praying for Little One all day. Thankful for her health and will continue as she recovers.

  • Monica - She is adorable! Beatiful! is there another word to describe beauty? I think should be in the dictionary ” Lttle One: means beauty” :). I am so happy for you and for her that everything is going so well. Kisses for that precious baby that you have in your arms. I can’t wait to see her “new smile” It will be perfect how it was before. The smiles from kids are the most beutiful thing that our eyes can see and they make our heart melt. I have two girls (3 years old and the other 4 months)and when they smile they conquer the world at least the conquer the mommy and dady. LOL! πŸ™‚

  • Amy - My sister-in-law has been updating me about your daughter’s surgery. I’m so glad to hear that everything went well. Our son is 13 months old and is preparing for his cleft palate repair next week. He had his lip repair at 3 months, and I remember his surgery vividly. As excellent as the surgery staff was, it was heart-wrenching to hand him over and wait in the waiting room that felt worlds away from where he lay.

I too was scared that I wouldn’t recognize him after the procedure and was prepared to grieve the loss of the face we’d loved so dearly. Maybe you found this to be true as well, but we were amazed how much our son just looked like himself after surgery – much more then we were expecting.

I predict your night in the hospital tonight will be a sacred one. I remember holding my son the whole night as he slept sporadically.

Blessings on your family during this time,

  • Nanette - Love the new hairdo…praying for an easy recovery. Thanks for sharing your story – it is inspiring that there is so much love in the world!

He is now 11 and knows all about his surgery but can no longer remember any of the discomfort etc. God has the control and he is such a tender father. Wishing you all strength and a speedy recovery for Little One – her lip may be different but she is still beautiful. look forward to seeing her new smile when she is ready to share it.

I’ve followed your blog for a few years and also the mother of an adopted child. He’s our only child however, I’m amazed at everything you do with your 5 children!

Little One’s journey has touched me so much….she is so precious and full of life.

I was in an antique store on Friday and thought of you…because I know you love antique stores even more than I do….and I knew that you would much rather be antique shopping than in a hospital waiting room. I stopped right there in that store and prayed for you, little one, and the surgeons. You’ve been on my heart ever since and I’m so glad to see and read that all is well…not easy, not delightful, but well. I continue to pray that this entire journey will be well with your soul.

    Blessings from Houston TX

I pulled up the site this morning to be greated by that messy hair beautiful little girl, the same little girl ive been watching for weeks, just with a different little smile. What a blessing. I can’t wait to watch her, along with the other kids as they continue to do great things, and make big leaps. Thank you for sharing.

  • Nicole - Great to hear that surgery went well – hope the recovery is just as smooth! I know that you have expressed a sense of loss in this change, which is understandable, however this is just one of many opportunities that your daughter may never have known if not for becoming a part of your family. Part of her story most certainly, but the story she has now has a chance to write will be tremendous.

  • Asha - She looks amazing.

  • RachaelB - Hope she is as comfortable as she can be right now and you are all healing well physically and emotionally. She’s STILL as perfectly beautiful as ever!

  • Jen H. - Glad to hear that the surgery went well. I am nostalgic looking at your last three posted pictures, as my son had cleft lip repair a little over a year ago. Best wishes on everything. They did a wonderful job.

  • Mary - Little One is such a strong young girl! She must learn it from her equally as strong parents and siblings. I’m assuming the new lip will change how she likes to be feed and I remember reading how feeding her was a struggle in the beginning when you first learned. I wish you all the best and will be thinking of you and little one as you begin learning a new way. I hope this time is easier for both of you. You have a courageous, beautiful, strong, smart little one.

You survived this test and now you will THRIVE through faith in the Lord, in your family and in your friends.

  • Paige Y - I keep coming back to see you and your baby girl! I love her sweet spirit. I love to see your complete family. Praying for a quick and easy recovery.

  • Alison - Oh you sweet girl. Good luck, you wonderful family! Uncharted waters ahead. Everything heals in time.

  • Celina - Beautiful! Prayers for a quick recovery πŸ™‚

  • Lauren - Love hearing an update about Little One and the rest of your family! Thank you for even having a giveaway amongst all you have going on πŸ™‚

  • Jessica - I absolutely love this picture! I was born with a cleft lip and palate and my mom is the one that told me about your blog. I love how honestly and beautifully you are preserving these memories in your photos. I promise your little girl will thank you some day when she is able to look back and actually see all she has gone through and feel empowered because she conquered it all! She is so beautiful and I pray all the best for you and your family as you continue this journey.
